The Rocketeer

Starring Billy Campbell, Jennifer Connelly, Alan Arkin, Timothy Dalton, Paul Sorvino and Terry O'Quinn as Howard Hughes

Directed by Joe Johnston

Animated Segment directed by Mark Dindal

Release Date: June 21st, 1991

Created by Howard Hughes and coveted by the Third Reich: the ability to fly without an airplane! Soon, this amazing device is in the hands of Cliff Secord and Peevy Peabody, a stunt pilot and mechanic who see the device as an opportunity! The duo create a new mystery man: THE ROCKETEER! They think that no one will come after their strange new device. That is, until mobster Eddie Valentine and Hollywoodland movie star Neville Sinclair are hot on their trail! Can the Rocketeer save the day? Will Cliff save his best gal, background actress Jenny?

If you read a lot of my reviews, you'll see I have a fondness for comic-book based movies, such as The Dark Knight trilogy, DC Animated movies, and The Avengers. So, it should come as no surprise I'd be interested in The Rocketeer, which is based on Dave Stevens' comic of the same name.  In regards to the comic, I've read occasional issues of the IDW 2011 volume, but have not yet read any of Stevens' original work; when I do, I'll type up a review later. In the meantime, let's discuss the film.

If the name Joe Johnston sounds familiar, he's the director of Captain America: The First Avenger, Honey, I shrunk the Kids, and Jumanji. Johnston is a great director (in my opinion) due to his great sense of style, great use of action sequences, and making great family friendly films. So, I think he was a great choice to direct this film. He makes the film such a joy to watch. Sure, the special effects haven't aged that gracefully, but Johnston gives the magic of seeing the Rocketeer such a joyful feeling, it's hard not to smile while viewing.

In terms of performances, they're good but cheesy. You'd think that would be a bad thing, but this is a movie about a man with a jetpack fighting mobsters; it's okay to be a little over the top here. Billy Campbell does a good job as Cliff; he makes the character confident, cocky and a likable protagonist. Jennifer Connelly is a good leading lady, making Jenny more than just a damsel in distress, and actually has a fun character arc involving her acting skills. My favorite character, however, has to be Timothy Dalton's Neville Sinclair. If you were to mix an arrogant actor with a spy, you'd get Sinclair.

Final Thoughts: I LOVE this movie. It's cheesy, but so much fun. The Rocketeer gets my full recommendation. However, I'm disappointed the 20th Anniversary Blu-ray has nothing to offer in terms of documentaries or retrospectives. Let's hope that gets corrected one day.

The Stuff

Starring Michael Moriarty, Andrea Marcovicci, Garrett Morris, Scott Bloom, Danny Aiello, and Paul Sorvino

Directed by Larry Cohen

Release Date: June 14th, 1985

What is The Stuff? That's the rub, nobody knows. It's Zero percent fat, highly addictive, and a complete mystery to the buying public. However, there's a dark side to such a fun treat. Are you eating it...or is it eating you?

This is a weird movie. I mean, there's been some questionable horror movies out there, but how do you top the absurdity of flesh eating pudding? Still, for what it is, The Stuff is an enjoyable 1980s horror movie. First, I have to give props to Cecil from www.goodbadflicks.com for highlighting this film on his show; he does a lot of cheesy but enjoyable films on his show and this was one of them.

The Stuff does a lot of cool things, such as utilizing elements of "Invasion of the Body Snatchers" and zombie fiction, which works really well and has some great prosthetic work in the film. The film also explores the themes of greed, addiction, and manipulated advertising. In fact, the best part of the movie is how it explores The Stuff and its popularity with the public in a non-traditional way. The cast does a great job, particularly Michael Morarity as "Mo", who's a sly manipulator and does a great job with the part. However, the one flaw with the film is the terrible green screen technology; it may have been impressive in 1985, but it looks really bad now.

Moonrise Kingdom

Starring Bruce Willis, Edward Norton, Bill Murray, Frances McDormand,  Jason Schwartzman and Tilda Swinton/
Introducing Jared Gilman and Kara Hayward

Directed by Wes Anderson

Release Date(s):

May 16, 2012....France
May 25, 2012.......U.S.

On a small New England island, there is a search party looking for two runaway children. One, a loner "Khaki Scout" (Gilman) and the other is a young girl lost in a world of young adult fantasy novels. These mismatched misfits soon embark on an adventure without adults or rules. However, there is a massive hurricane coming to strike the little island....

Wes Anderson thrives in his own world of dead-pan witty characters, muted colors, and French New Wave music. He is the filmmaker behind such indie classics as The Royal Tenenbaums, Rushmore, The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou, and The Darjeeling Limited. His unique perspective and quirky humor have made him a critical darling and a name among directors. Personally, I have liked most of his movies and find The Royal Tenenbaums to be the best of his filmography. So, what do I think of Moonrise Kingdom?

What Works: Once again, Anderson makes great use of his cast. On the whole, the cast does a great job with their characters. I liked Edward Norton as Scout Master Randy and Frances McDormand gets in a few funny lines as Suzy's Mother. However, my favorite has to be Jason Schwartzman as Cousin Ben, the fast-talking middle man who, while not marrying them, can approve their union as a Khaki Scout.  Finally, there is the young couple, Sam and Suzy, played by Jared Gilman and Kara Hayward, respectively. I found that each of these actors did a convincing job with their performance, particularly Hayward being the easy to anger Suzy.

Wes Anderson is well known for the lay-out of his camera work, and Moonrise Kingdom doesn't disappoint. Anderson makes the tiny New England island into a strange hodgepodge of forest, beach, small-town neighborhood, and camp site. For example, there's an amusing scene of Sam paddling across a river in a painted canoe while "Kaw-Liga" by Hank Williams plays on the soundtrack. The scene is both funny and strangely serious, making Sam envision himself as a brave Frontiersman.

What fails: The story, while charming, is scatterbrained at times and the conclusion leaves too many unanswered questions. I'd go into further detail, but I would be going into spoiler territory. The other problem stems from the "villains", such as the motorbike Khaki Scout or "Social Services". Why are these two the villains? They are certainly antagonists, a force opposing the protagonist, but what makes them oppose Sam and Suzy? I feel that a tad more character development with both characters would have helped.

Final Thoughts: If you've never heard of Wes Anderson before, rent some of his earlier films before seeing this. If you're an Anderson fan, I'd just skip this. It's not a bad movie, just not a terribly good one.

Drive Angry

Starring Nicolas Cage, Amber Heard, William Fichtner, and Billy Burke

Directed by Patrick Lussier

Release Date: February 25th, 2011

A man who broke out of hell to rescue his granddaughter from Satanists. If you aren't interested by now, just stop reading.

This is a high action, slightly cheesy action movie about Nicolas Cage fighting Southern satanists and a supernatural man known as "The Accountant". If you're a fan of the TV series Supernatural  you will notice several similar styles and a familiar weapon seen in the show's early seasons. The cast is really great, particularly Fichnter as The Accountant. The character steals every scene he's in as a stranger in a strange land who plays by his own rules with a dry sense of humor. Finally, I've got to mention this movie has what may be perhaps Nicolas Cage's worst hairpiece in his career. I'm not sure if it was his idea or the costumer's: it's a bad wig and it looks goofy on him.

Drive Angry is a fun exploitation film with thrilling action, interesting characters, and a lot of goofy charm.

Blow Out

Starring John Travolta, Nancy Allen, John Lithgow, and Dennis Franz

Directed by Brian De Palma

Release Date: July 21st, 1981

Jack Terry (Travolta) is a sound effects technician on B-grade Horror movies. Out one night recording sounds to use on a new movie, he hears what may be a blown-out tire may have been a political assassination. Soon enough, Jack beginning to uncover a deep truth which may not only get Jack killed, but also the young woman he saved, Sally (Allen).

A psychological thriller that delves into the technical aspect of sound recording that delivers Jack Terry (Travolta) into a world of conspiracies and murder. Travolta and Allen have a good rapport with one another and make a believable relationship under their circumstances. Due to the fact that sound is so important to the film's plot, the use of diagetic sound is amazingly clear and sharp, making the sounds of sirens fill the audience with alarm and panic.

Defendor

Starring Woody Harrelson, Elias Koteas, Kat Dennings, and Sandra Oh

Directed by Peter Stebbings

Release Date: February 19th, 2010 (Canada)

Let's get this out of the way: yes this did remind me of Kick-Ass. However, the two films are completely different and my review of Kick-Ass can be seen here. Where as that film is more of a cartoon-ish violent comedy, Defendor is a more realistic, drama of a real person who wants to be a superhero.

I have to applaud the actors, as each one of them gets to play around with a stereotypical comic-book character role, such as the stalwart hero or the plucky young sidekick. Particularly, I enjoyed the relationship between Arthur (Harrelson) and Kat (Dennings), as both actors are clearly having fun and work well together on screen. Speaking of Arthur, the character is a wonderfully diverse role for Harrelson, allowing him to play two diverse characters: Arthur, the timid nobody, and Defendor, the deep voiced, "bullet-proof" hero. Let it be said, the movie is definitely a lot darker than Kick-Ass; where the main hero in that movie gets to win a few fights, Defendor is constantly getting beat up and laughed at by the thugs he fights against.

Defendor is definitely worth seeing, particularly if you enjoyed Kick-Ass.

Legend

Starring Tom Cruise, Mia Sara, and Tim Curry

Directed by Ridley Scott

Release Date: April 18th, 1985

(Note: I am reviewing the US Theatrical Cut of Legend. There is a director's cut available, which I may review at a later date).

In a land far away,  a creature called DARKNESS (Curry) aspires to take over the world by eliminating the most rare creatures in the woods: Unicorns. Their protector, Jack o'the green (Cruise) is a reclusive young man in love with Princess Lili (Sara). Will the forces of good stop the cloven footed monster and save the unicorns?

As per usual with Ridley Scott films, Legend  is a gorgeous sight for the eyes, as if he were bringing a storybook fable to life. Everything from the set designs to the make-up and prosthetics are highly detailed and add a rich lushness to the visual style. Unfortunately, while the visuals are absolutely wonderful, I feel that the story and characters fall a tad flat. The story is fine, a standard fantasy concept of find the girl and save the day, but there's no real deviation or development beyond that. Sure, there's a text prologue, but I would have loved to see some back story on the main characters. For this review, I saw the 90 minute U.S. cut but would love to review the Director's cut at a later time.

Army of Darkness

Starring Bruce Campbell, Bridget Fonda, Ian Abercrombie and Ted Raimi

Directed by Sam Raimi

Release Date: February 19th, 1993

It's down to the last battle between Ashley "Ash' Williams and the Deadites in Army Of Darkness!

After facing the hordes of Evil in Evil Dead 2, Ash has been transported hundreds of years back in time! Now, he's a prisoner of....King Arthur?! What has Ash done to anger the legendary wielder of Excalibur? Maybe it's from running his mouth off, or unleashing the Deadites from the Necronomicon....again. Therefore, it's up to Ash, his "boomstick" 12-gauge shotgun, and a group of knights to fight off the unholy army of darkness!

Despite being titled "Army of Darkness", this is essentially Evil Dead 3. Here, Ash has transformed from a cowardly hero in Evil Dead to a catchphrase spouting, machismo Super-star in Army of Darkness! You talk about Ash with other Evil Dead fans, all of them will know "Hail to the King, Baby!" or "Shop Smart! Shop S-Mart!" as two of his legendary quotes from Army of Darkness. Also, changing tone from the cheap, eerie tone of Evil Dead to the goofy, excessive tone of Evil Dead 2, Army of Darkness is more of an epic adventure movie with swords, magic, and evil doppelgangers. Trust me,  this is a fun action movie that will definitely appease Evil Dead fans and fans of Bruce Campbell's B-movie action roles.

Piranha 3D

Starring Elizabeth Shue, Jerry O'Connell, Ving Rhames, Christopher Lloyd, and Richard Dreyfus

Directed by Alexandre Aja

Release Date: August 20th, 2010
Plot: Piranha attack college students on a lake. No, seriously, that's as complex as the story gets, folks.

However, that doesn't make the film any less fun. Sure, it's stupid; but it's supposed to be a stupid, fun ride. Would anyone really attack Piranha with shotguns and a tazer? No, but it definitely makes for a goofy fight between the piranha and the Lake Victoria police department. But, you may wonder, did I see the 3D version? No, I didn't see the 3D version. I believe that the technology is still its' infancy and needs to be improved; until then, I'll stick with 2d. Does that make the film any worse? No, not really. Unlike other 3D movies, I found that there were little instances of "Hey! This will look awesome in 3D" distracting moments in the film.

Piranha 3D isn't perfect, but it is a silly gory piece of turn off your brain entertainment.

Groundhog Day

Starring Bill Murray, Andie MacDowell, Chris Elliot, Brian Doyle-Murray, and Harold Ramis

Directed by Harold Ramis

Release Date: February 12th, 1993

Grumpy Weatherman Phil Connors (Murray) is stuck in Puxatawney, Pennsylvania. Strangely, he feels like he's repeating the same day over and over again. When there's no tomorrow, what would you do?

I'm a big Bill Murray fan, with "Groundhog Day" being one of his best films. The film definitely has fun with the concept of the time loop, the experience of re-living the same day. For example, Phil casually clocks the day-by-day conversations of two people so well that he can walk past the two of them and rob an armored car. Murray is most certainly having fun with the role, playing up the zany behavior of his circumstances.

The Last Dragon

Directed by Michael Schultz

Starring Taimak, Vanity, and William H. Macy

Release Date: March 22nd, 1985

This is an insanely bizarrre action comedy. Similar to Kung Fu Hustle, The Last Dragon is a broad, cartoonish take on kung-fu action movies with a major obsession with Bruce Lee. The movie is certainly a guily pleasure, with such head-scratching moments as "Bruce" Leroy (Taimak)'s obsessive man-crush on Bruce Lee or an off-screen aquatic monster that can destroy a pig foot in seconds but only gives the antagonist a paper-cut scar. However, if you're looking for a movie with a lot of laughs and a scene with Mr.T combined with Santa Claus, then search for The Last Dragon.

Wake Up, Ron Burgundy

Starring Will Ferrell, Christina Appelgate, Steve Carell, and Paul Rudd

Directed by Adam McKay

Release Date: Never Officially Released in Theaters

What's that, you say? ANOTHER Ron Burgundy movie, when did that come out? Well, Ferrell and cast had so much material for ANCHORMAN: The Legend of Ron Burgundy, that an entire sub-plot was cut out of the movie and released as its own DVD extra with the movie. For years, WAKE UP! was only available for a short time offer, forcing Ferrell fans to hunt eBay auctions for the rare "lost" movie. Well, thanks to Best Buy, now you can watch this rare movie on blu-ray!

As for the movie itself, it's an enjoyable comedy for fans of Anchorman. Certain characters are given on-screen appearances, such as Ron's mentor Jess Moondragon or Ed Harken's deliquent son, and a new misadventure with the Channel 4 News Team is explored. Instead of Ron and Veronica figthing for top billing on the news, a group of radicals are terrorizing San Diego and are now after Ron Burgundy to stop the lies (...whatever that means). This is billed as a "sequel", but don't fool yourselves folks, it's just cut material from the original film. Don't get me wrong, it's still a really funny film, but the tacked on narration trying to justify how this takes place after the first movie was a bad idea (still, the narrator gets some really funny lines when he goes on a tangent). If you enjoy a low-brow comedy, check out Wake Up, Ron Burgundy!

My Bloody Valentine (1981)

Starring Paul Kelman,Lori Hallier, Neil Affleck, Keith Knight, Alf Humphreys,Cynthia Dale,Helene Udy , Rob Stein , Tom Kovacs , Terry Waterland,Carl Marotte, Jim Murchison , Gina Dick , Peter Cowper, and Don Francks

Directed by George Mihalka

Release Date: Feb 11, 1981

Ok, I admit that this film is combination of Halloween, Friday the 13th and Canada...but I don't care because this is a great underrated 1980s horror film. Now, before you go running off to Netflix to rent the 2009 remake (in 3-D!), give the original a first glance and you'll be glad you did. The town of Valentine Bluffs has a sad history with St.Valentine's Day: 20 years ago a group of miners were caught in a cave-in while their supervisors left early to go to the town Valentine's Dance. The lone survivor went insane, killed his supervisors and dedicated his life to making sure the town never celebrated Valentine's Day ever again. Present Day, the teens of Valentine Bluffs don't believe the local legend and want to celebrate even with the rise of the deadly miner back in town. This film scores major points in my book by making the connection to valentine's day effective and creepy, instead of just a stupid gimmick where the killer could have dressed up like a cherub (....like in Valentine). Also, the death scenes are effective, chilling, and innovative, which is the opposite of the reviews i 've heard from the 2009 remake. If you're in the mood for a horror film after seeing "The Thing" or "Night of the Living Dead" for the 100th time, check up on this "bloody" chilling flick.

Coraline

Starring the voice talents of Dakota Fanning, Ian McShane, and Teri Hatcher

Directed by Henry Selick

Release Date: February 6, 2009

Director Henry Selick is a stop-motion genius. He first dazzled audiences with A Nightmare Before Christmas then followed up with James and the Giant Peach (the less said about Monkeybone, the better). Now, he adapts Neil Gaiman's novel about a young girl who discovers another world in the wallpaper of her new home. On a personal note, I had to move around several times with my family when i was younger, so I understood Coraline's frustration in finding her new surrounding are boring and why she'd repeatedly return to the other world. As stated previously, Selick is a master at the art of stop-motion animation, so all the characters are lively and detailed, and the environments they set in the story are gorgeous to look at with outrageous and amazingly bright colors that are visual treats for the eyes. Though watch out, as Coraline becomes wary of the dangers of the Other World, so should you as the viewer. Also, Dakota Fanning is just wonderful as Coraline, the energetic and playful protagonist. Teri Hatcher brings alot of range when portraying Coraline's mother Mel and the seemingly wonderful Other Mother. Strange, moody, and a visual treat. Coraline is just a wonderful film.

9

Starring the voice talents of Elijah Wood, John C. Reily, Martin Landau, Jennifer Connely, and Christopher Plumber

Directed by Shane Acker

Release Date: September 9, 2009 (9-9-09)

After mankind has gone it will be up to 9 voodoo dolls to save the earth from deadly machines. In the tradition of such memorable dystopian tales like The terminator or Wall-E comes 9, a tale about heroism even when our main character is made of cogs and cloth. The story is good, although the backstory/set up is a tad vague so i wish there had been more explaination about where and when this takes place; but then again that could be better left unsaid (maybe this is an alternate 1946 or maybe 9 takes place hundreds of years in the future). Two key aspects of this film are the amazing CGI animation that would make Pixar envious and the action sequences that are thrillng and spectacular to view. If you're going to take little ones, I'd just like point out there are a few deaths implied and shown on screen.

Release Date: Jul 09, 1982

Within the depths of cyberspace, a malifulous computer program called "Master Control" has been stealing multitudes of computer programs to horde power from. The program is growing out of control, and the only way to stop it is to journey from the real world into the virutal world. Hacker/Gamer/Former Programmer Kevin Flynn may be the only person to end the dangerous software.

Tron is viewed as one of the hallmarks of science fiction in the last 30 years, influencing many other works of fiction and becoming a staple of pop culture history (seen in such works as "Chuck" or "South Park"). Unfortunately, the film was seen as a financial failure during its initial theatrical run. Now, it has become a cult phenomenon that has continued on in the form of video games, toys, and a sequel "Tron:Legacy" premiering Dec. 17, 2010. Nearly 30 years later, the film is still an entertaining adventure with interesting visuals, rich concepts, and dry humor that is superbly delivered by Jeff Bridges. I enjoyed the fact that the movie explores such complex subjects like religion, persecution, and belief where the characters are mostly bits of data personified as actual people from the real world. Sure, the special effects are more dated and simple than from a film made in 2010, but I liked the simplicity of The Grid, as if the reason the world is so block and generic is because Master Control absorbed more and more of The Grid into itself.

A great 1980s action adventure science fiction fantasy with an hero made of data and numbers.

Directed by Troy Duffy

Release Date: October 30, 2009
After ten long years, The Saints are back! When you thought you'd never get the opportunity to see what would be after the credits ran on the 1999 cult classic, director/screenwriter Troy Duffy brings back the McManus brothers and their vendetta against the mobsters of Boston. By now, you've probably seen numerous negative reviews bashing BDSII, saying that it's "stale, cliched, one-dimensional" and so forth: Well, rejoyce my Boondock fanatics, as those complaints never came across my mind while I enjoyed a sequel that revels in over-the-top action, raunchy humor, and scheming villains just as much as the first film. And, as this film becomes a love letter to the fans, you'll find numerous references to the first film, such as Connor's devotion to bringing rope on a job or getting to see long dead Rocco (David Della Rocco) as the Brothers' guiding spirit from beyond the grave. If you're a fan of the first film, Equilibrium, or Hard-Boiled, you'll get a kick out of The Boondock Saints II: All Saint's Day.
