He doesn't learn Karate in this movie, he learns Kung fu. The only reason it's called "The Karate Kid" is to capitalize on the name from the original movie starring Pat Morita and Ralph Macchio. Sure, there are a couple of good fight scenes, but the rest of the movie is full of poor dialogue.
